From CSU-CHILL
Featured Articles
These are examples of CSU-CHILL data selected from meteorologically interesting cases. The data plots generally have had some basic level of post-processing applied (i.e., calculations of derived fields, utilization of specialized base maps, etc.)
- Hailstorm observation of 20 June 2008
- During continuing testing of the dual offset feed antenna, various scans through severe thunderstorm echoes were conducted on 20 June 2008. One hail-producing storm passed within 20 km of the CSU-CHILL radar site. This article presents some of the polarimetric data fields observed in this storm at low elevation angles.
- Antenna Pattern Evaluation
- A 9-meter dual-offset Gregorian antenna was installed in the spring of 2008 at the CSU-CHILL radar facility to upgrade the performance from the center-fed parabolic reflector previously used at the facility. The new antenna design has several advantages over the old antenna, primarily eliminating beam blockage by using an offset-feed structure and reducing cross-polarization with a dual-reflector design. The antenna pattern was measured in the summer of 2008 by REU student Michael Wood, the results of which are presented in this article.

Technical Notes
These articles deal with engineering topics of interest to users of CSU-CHILL data.
- Radar Echoes from Wind Turbines (TN-004)
- Wind Turbines have become increasingly common in recent years. Their Doppler spectral characteristics are presented, along with an animation showing the repetitive patterns present in the turbine spectra. An audio presentation of the same data is also available, clearly showing the temporal variation of the echo. A brief discussion on the effects of wind turbine proliferation on radar meteorology is also presented.
- Coherent Leakage (TN-003)
- This is a short discussion on coherent leakage, discussing the various causes of coherent leakage in weather radar receivers. Some troubleshooting tips are also provided.
- Interpreting Housekeeping data (TN-002)
- This article discusses the housekeeping data inserted into the data stream output by the signal processor.
- Using calibration files with Time Series data (TN-001)
- This article talks about the calibration data generated by the CSU-CHILL signal processing system. When processing time series data, the calibrations must be applied to the data as shown in the article.
