CSU-CHILL Casebook: 19 June, 2003

Scattered non-severe thunderstorms developed within the CSU-CHILL coverage area during the evening of 19 June 2003 (UTC date; locally 18 June). Some of these storms produced locally intense rain rates. (The NWS issued a flash flood warning for southeastern Larimer County at 0220 UTC). A thunderstorm RHI scan through a convective echo over Fort Collins was done at 0253 UTC (see VCHILL link below). The near-surface echo core contained reflectivity levels of ~50 dBZ, values of ~ +2 - 3 dB, and appreciable differential propagation phase shift. This combination of radar measurements is typical of high (~ 50 mm / hr or more) rain rates. Observers in Fort Collins reported "torrential rain" during the storm's passage.
