DOW radar data evaluations: August 26, 2011

DOW 7 at CSU-CHILL

Coordinated dual-polarization data collection was done by the DOW 7 and CSU-CHILL radars during the conduct of a 20hr project.

Dr. Brenda Dolan (research scientist in the CSU Atmospheric Science Department) took photographs from an aircraft in the traffic pattern at the Greeley-Weld County Airport (GXY). The CSU-CHILL radar and the temporarily-visiting NASA N-Pol radar are located on opposite sides of the main runway at GXY.

Balloon-borne calibration sphere

A light weight foil-covered sphere provides a target with a known backscattering cross section that is used as a reference during a radar calibration experiment.
