Featured Articles

These are examples of CSU-CHILL data selected from meteorologically interesting cases. The data plots generally have had some basic level of post-processing applied (i.e., calculations of derived fields, utilization of specialized base maps, etc.)

High Rain Rates at Denver International Airport Observed with Indexed Beams
Around 2342 UTC on 10 September 2006, localized areas of heavy convective rain developed over Denver International Airport (KDEN), reducing the visibility to 0.25 statute miles. Rain rates calculated from CSU-CHILL Kdp data collected at one minute intervals are plotted. Since the signal processing system was operating in indexed beam mode, the range gate locations remain fixed with respect to the ground.
HDR hail map from 9 June 2004
During the mid-afternoon hours of 9 June 2004, a damaging hailstorm moved from southwest to northeast across a portion of the greater Denver metropolitan area. Hail identification using the Hail Differential Reflectivity (HDR) parameter is presented in the article.
Extreme Rain Rates Observed on June 19th 2002
High Precipitation Rates observed in the afternoon hours of 19 June 2002 during a strong thunderstorm that passed a few kilometers to the north of the CSU-CHILL radar site.

These articles deal with engineering topics of interest to users of CSU-CHILL data.

Coherent Leakage
This is a short discussion on coherent leakage, discussing the various causes of coherent leakage in weather radar receivers. Some troubleshooting tips are also provided.
Interpreting Housekeeping data
This article discusses the housekeeping data inserted into the data stream output by the signal processor.
Using calibration files with Time Series data
This article talks about the calibration data generated by the CSU-CHILL signal processing system. When processing time series data, the calibrations must be applied to the data as shown in the article.
