CSU-CHILL Casebook: 31 July, 2003

On the afternoon of 31 July 2003, an instrumented storm intercept van drove towards a thunderstorm cell located a short distance northwest of the CSU-CHILL radar. As the van parked and prepared to make precipitation measurements, radar scanning shifted into high time resolution, PPI sector scan mode. During these scans, the radial velocities displayed the small scale divergence pattern of a microburst along the 332 degree azimuth from the radar at a range of approximately 20 km.
