CSU-CHILL radar data indicating that both hail (positive Hail Differential Reflectivity; HDR) and heavy rain (large specific differential propagation phase; Kdp) are present in a low elevation PPI sweep through a thunderstorm. A series of plots documenting the time evolution of this hail / rain mixture have been prepared. (more)

Vertical Ice Crystal Orientation $\Psi_{dp}$ data observed in an RHI through a thunderstorm on 21 June 2010. Differential phase values progress down the color scale with increasing range when the beam passes through oblate raindrops near the surface. The color progression is reversed in the upper portion of the echo where a strong electric field is imposing a vertical orientation on the ice crystals.
