Precipitation descending through the melting level. Precipitation descending through the melting level.

CSU-CHILL X-band RHI scan through several shower echos that span the height of the melting level. The precipitation streamers become more vertical as the hydrometeors descend through the melting level due to a combination of changes in the environmental wind with altitude and due to the generally higher fall speed of liquid drops vs. frozen hydrometeors.
