CSU-CHILL Casebook: 24 May, 2005

Thunderstorms developed along a line located a short distance north of the CSU-CHILL radar around mid-day on 24 May 2005. Low level outflow from these storms generated a gust front which propagated ahead of the intense precipitation cores. The thunderstorm RHI scan done at 1930 UTC intercepted both the gust front (leading edge near 6.5 km range), and the more distant precipitation core. (See VCHILL example below.) Joint consideration of the reflectivity and fields indicates that hail was present in the strong echo core starting at a range of ~22 km.
